Do you think Native Americans should have rights over images used for mascots?

I just saw a group of Native American Indians on c-span talking about things like the Redskins and Chiefs. Would it make sense to give federally recognized tribes control over such images so that they could communicate the original meanings? Tell me your thoughts!

Update:

Michael da Man--I agree with everything you said, except for black people getting a free ride on income taxes. That would be totally unfair. A free ride for college (for those unable to afford it) makes sense, though. In fact, it makes sense for all ethnic groups, imo.

Well, let's see we robbed them of their land, decimated their numbers, eradicated much of their culture and beliefs and have done little to make amends so why shouldn't they have the right to communicate the original meaning.

Yes, they should. It's pathetic in this day and age that sports teams are still using Indian stereotypes for team names and mascots. No team is calling itself the Fighting Whites or the Mighty Negroes! Those are clearly offensive so why are Native Americans still subject to such treatment? I think it's great that American Indians are able to have casinos on their reservations and finally get a break. African Americans should be getting a break as well for their horrible treatment such as being exempt from paying income taxes.

No. There are mascots and cartoons based on all different types of cultures. Just because Speedy Gonzalez is Mexican does not mean us Mexicans should have the rights over the character. If the mascot/cartoon is degrading, though, then I think they should have a right to protest against it.

  • people should not be used as mascots. so why are we? does america still see us as less than human? apparently so.

it seems many people think we are so simple as to not know when we are honored or when we are insulted, etc. they tell us we are being honored and think we should go..ok thanks.

its not an honor to see people who don't have a clue about you mock your beliefs and stereotype an entire race of people by dressing up in what they think we dress in and jumping around acting foolish to make other non natives cheer. wtf?
