After giving a brief summary answer to a question I wanted to expand on my answer but no edit button showed?

I occasionally want to provide additional response and have never encountered this before. Could this be because someone chose to give me a thumbs down on my initial response, which I knew to be accurate but incomplete in explanation. Which was why I wanted to edit it in the first place? I was eventually able to access it and edit it successfully but only by accessing the question by retrieving it through "My Profile" - "My Questions". I guess my question is actually why would the Y!A system respond differently?

Update:

The small Grey "edit" tab below my existing answer was the missing button I am referring to. When I accessed my profile Y!A did prompt me to Login, after I did so and accessed my question again the "edit" tab or button was present and I was able to edit my answer at that time. But this still does not clearly explain why I could not access it a few minutes after my initial posting, I had not closed my Y!A browser window or even navigated away from the question. I had simply spent a few minutes in research in other tabs to further develop my answer.

As long as the question is still OPEN, you can edit your answer.

You should find a small gray Edit link underneath your answer and above the box of the thumbs-up, -down and the report abuse flag.

If you don't find it and you're sure the question is still open, it may be just a glitch so you need to log out then re-login.

Thumbs-down has nothing to do with your ability to edit your answer.

I was complaining of the same problem until I learned how to 'adjust the length of time before password prompting'.

Some Yahoo! services, such as Yahoo! Answers, require you to periodically enter your password even though you are already signed in. If the time you chose for your password prompting expires, you will only be able to 'browse' Yahoo! Answers as if you were logged-out. This is why you did not see the Edit button. Try to log-out then check out the question you answered, you won't find this button under your answer just the same as when your passwred prompt time expires.

Password prompt time may be set by default to only 1 hour or so. You can adjust it to be up to 2 weeks. I adjusted mine to 1 day.

I hope I clarified it well as I'm not very fluent in English. =)

You can't edit the question but you can add additional information. Click on the pencil (edit) icon under the question and you will find the option.
