how much do you get on unemployment?
I make $16 per hour and I also earn commission. How does unemployment work? I lease apartments and we haven't been doing very well lately. I'm worried they might lay me off. I've never been layed off before. How do they determine the amount you receive?

The basic rule works out as 4% of your high quarter earnings during your qualification period. The qualification period is the 4 quarters that ended with the 2nd quarter prior to applying for benefits. As a general rule of thumb this works out to around 50% of your weekly wage, assuming that your wages were fairly stead throughout the qualification period.
However every state has a benefit cap that may result in a lower payment. If your wages were fairly high this can result in a MUCH lower UI benefit than the calculated amount. I'm just coming off of UI (new job starting tomorrow!) and my benefit calculated to $760 per week but the MO cap is $320 so that's all that I got.

It depends where you live. Unemployment benefits vary from state to state.

I am in IL and got the max of $349/wk. With 4 kids, it was $511 weekly.
