Please help me. How can I stop Microsoft's automatic updates?

I have Windows XP and they are driving me crazy taking over my computer. They force my computer to reboot without my permission. Help, help. Thank you.

Update:

Thanks Michael. Short, sweet, accurate. Guess it's that time of night, brain not working.

Right click on My computer......choose properties......Auto Updates on the Tabs.....change to right choice and then apply.

You can decide whether to allow fully automated updates - download and you select the time to install - or just notify. I always have updates run when I am shutting down - AFTER very carefully manually screening the update to see if I really want it on the system.

BTW contrary to another opinion on here, Macs do NOT do the same thing. With a Mac you cannot install anything without the admin authorising it and the admin password being entered. It is one reason why they are more resistant to malware. As with a PC, Macs can check for updates automatically or manually depending on the user's preferences.

Smart Guy's a freaking idiot because Macs do the EXACT same thing.

Michael, on the other hand, is exactly right.
