stick welding (help needed)?

hey. i am a 14 year old that goes to a technical school for diesel mechanics. i am slowly teaching myself how to weld. i am working on stick welding and i need to know if my electrode is for a/c or d/c. it is #6010 and it is red. i also need to know what voltage to have it on while im welding. thank you for your help.

    I would go with 1/4" 7018, it's easier to run than 6010, and you have to adjust your amperage by trial and error or experience. if it sticks, it's too low, if it burns a hole, it's too hot. Good Luck

    You asked what voltage to set the machine to.The machine is prewired for voltage and should be plugged into the proper outlet. Did you mean to ask; what amperage should you set the machine at?

    You did not state the diameter of the rod you are using. If it is 1/8" then start at 80 amps and adjust from there. If you are using 3/32" rod; start at 65 amps and adjust from there.

    E-6010 is a DC rod.

    Also, make sure the machine is set on "reverse polarity". That is the ground is negative and the rod (stinger) is positive.
