I currently own a 1995 Volvo 850 Turbo with 420 000km (roughly 260k miles). Once you own a Volvo you will not feel comfortable or safe in anything else, you will never go American again. I would be more likely to buy a Volvo with 208k miles than an American car with 100k miles. Have the car checked out by a mechanic familiar with Volvos. If i was in your situation i would probably buy it even though i have an identical car, just because of the low mileage. Hope the deal works out for ya!! If you need any help with it check out www.mathewsvolvosite.com, lots of help with repairs and other issues from Volvo owners all over the world.

Well i will be honest, i dont know to much about older volvos. I am not sure what type of volvo, but 1995 isnt to old. 1,500 is not to bad, but what is going to matter is how much work it will need. ALthough the car might be able to run for along time, 200 thousand miles is alot for any car. Honestly, judge be the condition of the car. Have a mechanic look at it if you can. However, some easy resources you have are kelly blue book, which will give you an free estimate of how much the car is worth ( www.kbb.com )

I also recommend doing a carfax vehicle history report to make sure its never been in any major accidents or anything else. ( www.carfax.com )

Volvos are generally very reliable, especially older ones. The current condition of the car will give you a good idea about what shape its in.

    good luck!

I have owned Volvo cars for years and I currently own a 1995 Volvo 960 wagon. My older Volvos were incredible. My 1995 has been good, but not as troublefree as the older ones. If my car reaches 200,000 miles, I would be thrilled. My car has 113K miles on it right now. Instead of buying the 1995 Volvo, why not go for a Lexus, Toyota, Honda or Acura. You should be able to find a nice one and you'll have less trouble with the car.

I owned a 1996 Volvo 850, it was family owned + maintained, we always brought it to the dealership.

I "inherited" the car in 2003 as my first car and treated it SO poorly. I received the car with 101,000 miles... and at 150,000 miles or so, the transmission went on the car in 2005!

That being said, Volvos are reliable and great cars, if you TAKE CARE OF THEM. I truly abused mine, I always ignored oil changes and drove back and forth to my college in Virginia (800 miles from my home) --- as well as all sorts of other places.

Point being --- if you know the previous owners very well, you trust them, and know that they are METICULOUS about their cars... then yes, go with the car. If you don't know them, or if it's a dealership... DO NOT DO IT. You are going to have HUGE costs...

In my own opinion, never buy a Volvo with more than 85K miles on it if you don't know the previous owners and their habits...

** By the way ** In 1994, Volvo introduced the Volvo 850's new engine style and ALL the 1994 Volvo 850s have had SERIOUS issues... if your 1995 was made in 1994 (you can check this on the glass, it would say 94 VOLVO Sweden) then REALLY do not buy it!

As long as it's been serviced properly and not leaking any serious oil from the main seal you should be okay. 200K miles is barely broken in for a Volvo. The biggest thing to worry about in those 5-cylinder Volvos however, is to make sure the timing belt has been changed regularly. Check and see if that belt has been changed recently. If not, it will cost you double the 1500 you are paying to get it fixed if it breaks.

    1995 850?

These cars are solid, safe and reliable.

208k isn't much for an older Volvo,

It'll easily reach 350k with the proper maintenance.

$1500 is a good price as well.

If I was you, I would get a carfax report and try to get service records, just to see what you're getting into.

    Good luck!

If it's a 240 it's a decent deal if the car is in relatively good shape, interior not trashed, paint mostly shiny and everything works. If it's an 850 forget it. They are too expensive to repair and one with 208K miles on it will need some things.
