Why are religions tax free?

Why not tax Church owned real estate and bussiness endeavors. From where I sit it looks like 20% of the country is tax free.

    Government deems religion to be a good thing and therefore helps it out through tax relief.

    churches are not taxed because they don't have a say in this country.

    And then the church could promote, endorse or campaign for political leaders without fear of losing it's tax-exempt status. I'm all for it.
