River boats or Barges from Pittsburgh to New Orleans?

I read about this trip being done in 1811 in the Pittsburgh Post Gazette and wondered if it could still be traveled nowadays?

Update:

Is it possible to hire a barge or other boat and do the trip myself or is it all handled by cruise companies?

Yes, there are two companies that (did) offer that possibility.

MAL has paddle-wheel steamboats that make (made) the trip from Pittsburgh to New Orleans, but you would need to purchase several segments together. Best to call their reservations center.

RiverBarge also operates (operated) river cruises. They use a push-boat (a type of tug boat that is used only for pushing barges on the inland rivers system) and two barges that have been converted into floating hotel units. Check out their website.

Oh no! Both of the companies have gone under! I just went to their respective websites and they are not operating in 2009. I'm very sorry to see this happen.

    Good luck and smooth sailing!

it is a routine trip these days. a lot of the steel products from the steel mills ships by barge to new orleans. the freight rate was much lower than by rail.
