My friend has a possible court date coming up, but doesn't want to defend herself, what should she do?

So she doesn't know when her court date is and would like to be prepared before hand. She's accused of shoplifting, she paid her fee to the store and now is waiting on her court letters. So how should she go on about getting a defender?

is one appointed to her, or is she supposed to find one on her own?

She's accused of stealing cough medicine from meyers by the way...

Was your friend arrested? If so she should have gotten a court date with her charges. She can call the court at anytime to see if/when court is.

Sometimes the place where she stole from has their own policy. If she paid a fine to the company, then she might be resolved. She has to find out.

If she has a court date, the court would be putting out the fines and compensation. It also depends on what state it happened in too I'm sure.

As for a public defender, you have to show up for a first appearance in court, then apply for one. You will then be given a new court date.

    Good luck.

Look, did she or did she not steal the cough medicine. If she stole it then dont waste the courts time, go before the judge and say you are sorry and that it was a momentary slip and it will not happen again. You really do not need F.Lee Baily on this case.

She'll need to contact the court beforehand to see what the propwer procedure is.

She'll be advised of the charges against her at the arraignment - at that time, she would typically be asked if she has an attorney. If she can't afford one (and they usually will need some documentation), a public defender would be appointed.

Find her a defense lawyer or a legal aid (usually cheaper). She must defend herself to lessen her charges. She needs to backup with all the evidence given by the crown attorney. (This is in Canadian courts)
