My friend's social security # was used by an unknown person with a fake address. What next?

My friend said her social security # was used by an unknown person with a fake address. What next?

Could somebody please tell me what to tell her to do next. I've read the identity theft stuff but don't have it with me. Could somebody please help? Thanks!

Have her put it on fraud alert through Trans Union Fraud Dept. Their toll free @ 1-800-680-7289. They will notify the other 2 bureaus and must be renewed every 90 days in order to keep it active. She should also request her free credit reports from annualcreditreport.com or call them toll free @ 1-877-322-8228 for all 3 free reports. If there is something on the reports she's not aware of, dispute it immediately. She can also call Social Security Fraud Dept toll free @ 1-800-269-0271.

Have her call her bureaus to put an alert on her social security number. That will cause the any company that pulls her credit to have to contact her to verify that the transaction is valid, or she can have them frozen for a while too.

    Equifax Call (888) 766-0008

    Experian Call 888-397-3742

    Trans Union Call (800) 680-7289

She should only have to call one of the three and it will put alerts out to the other ones. But if she wants she can call all of them just to be safe (but watch out of Experian because I have heard they try to sell you their 'credit monitoring' system so just make sure she knows she can say No to all those programs. They are the type that are free for the first 30 days and then charge you after that.)

Also depending on what the person used her ss# for she may need to contact the FTC (if she has a police report filed) and the Social Security Administraton if it was in regards to welfare, employment or benefits.

I would call all three major credit bureaus and file a fraud alert, i would also contact SS Administration and have them investigate the activity. i would also recommend that you enroll in credit protection so they can monitor your credit activity through all three credit bureaus. File a police report as well.
