Giving some "old-school" love...?

OK with Dikembe's career ending last night and William "The Fridge" Perry in the hospital-- just thought i'd give some recognition to these two "icons" of the Sport- who may or may not be hall-of-famers. But just wanted you to share your thoughts, clips, stories about these two individuals-- so just giving them some recoginition and love! Anyone remember the "Super Bowl" shuffle???

My greatest Fridge moment was his 1st nationally televised game on Monday night against our hated rivals...the Green Bay Packers. Mike Ditka talked all week about him having to make some changes to the goal line offense. We had no idea how far he was willing to go. Fridge really didn't play much that season prior to that Monday night game. After that he became a regular in the rotation on the defensive line. He even started as defensive tackle in the Super Bowl.

Coming from Chicago I may be a little biased, but I have always said the 85 Bears defense was the best all time. And the Fridge had something to do with that. Yes he scored touchdowns and that's what he is famous for, but he did help Mongo McMicheal and Dan Hampton hold down the inside so that opposing teams couldn't run, and players like Otis "Mama's Boy" Wilson, Richard Dent (Super Bowl XX MVP), and Wilbur Marshall could get to the QB. The Fridge even attempted to throw a pass in the Super Bowl too. The 85 Bears gave up only 10 points for the entire playoffs and Super Bowl that season shutting out the Giants and the Rams in the NFC title game.

The great thing about the Super Bowl Shuffle is that it was released halfway through the season. It was the Bears way of saying that we're going to win it, and there is nothing anyone can do about it.

Dikembe Mutombo to me is a hall of famer. He didn't score many points, but he kept points from being scored. He lasted longer in the league than his Georgetown alumni...Pat Ewing & Alonzo Mourning...he blocked more shots too...and he equaled them in NBA Finals appearances...one.

He also was one of the players MJ talked the most trash too during his career. Dikembe asked him to shoot a free throw during a game with his eyes closed. They would also play one on one for the fans before their games when their teams played...but you would have gotten to the stadium very early to see it.

Most people will remember Mutombo for his humaitarian efforts all across the globe from the NBA Cares program to C.A.R.E. His is a incredible human being.

  • When I saw Mr. Mutombo go down on that knee, I knew that was the last time the "Finger-Wagger' was going to play. I mean, the man will be 43 this summer and he could only last so much longer. In the back of my mind and others, we knew he was an injury away from retirement.

I'm saddened to see him go, his efforts in the community were countless and he had unbelievable character. How about the great debate on the Technical for the "Finger Wag?!" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=stjzC8pG15A

As for "The Fridge," he was an absolutely oustanding player and a joy to watch. He has had health problems in the past and was hospitalized for 5 months last year I believe. Neverthless, I wish him the best and a full recovery, it's way too early to lose Will Perry.

I watched the Super Bowl Shuffle when it aired. I was living in Chicago when the Bears played the Pats. Jim "Is the" McMahon, Sweetness, the Fridge, Iron Mike... I don't think there has ever been a team with more nicknames than the '85 Bears. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fJNC3dgreaU

Dikembe will be in the Hall of Fame. I was living in Denver, Co when the Nuggets drafted him and met him on many occasions at Cherry Creek Mall. He was always polite and kind. I watched as the Nuggets beat the the #1 seeded Seattle Supersonics, with him on the ground clutching the basketball and raising it in the air... rolling around in excitement... it remains one of my favorite NBA moments. He's won too many DPOY awards and has done so much overseas to help the impoverished including building hospitals and schools with donations and his own money.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kdi68nTkn7o

Mutombo will be recognized in the HOF.

Off course, Mike Ditka didn´t let Walter Payton get the Touch Down and he sent the "fridge" to get it so, Walter Payton, one of the greatest running backs on NFL history, never got a Super Bowl Touch Down thanks Mike Ditka and the "fridge". Kind regards.
