Fuel problems with a 68 Chevelle?
I have a 68 Chevelle with a 350. (mechanical fuel pump)
This is not my daily driver. I only drive it once a week or so. I have noticed that when I go to start the car that it will not start unless I spray some starting fluid into the carb, or just pour a little gas into it.
Even if I pump the gas pedal and try and start it will not, however I can start to smell gas so I know that the fuel pump is working. Once started it drives just fine. If I let it sit for 9 hours while I am at work it will still start fine. Then next morning however (warm or cold out) I can not get it to start.
Any ideas?

A fairly common problem with a carbureted engine. Some have carb leaks which allows the fuel to leak away and the float bowl must be refilled before it can start. It varies in severity and can take quite a bit of cranking to pump up enough fuel for the car to crank. Sometime this is made worse by a defective carb accelerator pump. You might try a carb rebuild and/or a small electric fuel pump to rectify the situation. The fuel is going somewhere and most likely it is going into your engine, diluting the oil and washing down the rings for accelerated wear of the internal components.

sounds like your fuel filter is getting ready to go out. it is probably plugged so check that first. you should be able to blow air through it, if you can't then it's full of junk. also check you fuel pressure regulator to make sure that it is working right. it's can't be too many things , but I would check these things out first!
