Should I just junk the car or should I have it towed in for repair?

I own a 2002 chevy citation that was stolen and then abandoned running in the middle of the street. There is a screw driver in the ignition and the car can not be shifted into gear. .

You can source an '02 column from a junkyard, and be back in business in an afternoon of simple wrenching. Or, you can try to undo the damage on your existing column - that would be up to you to see if its extensive enough.

Unless they did some other horrid thing to your car, the cost to fix the car will probably hover around 800 bucks (mostly labor), or less if you can do the work yourself.

The only thing to be nervous about is that evil little airbag - make sure the battery is disconnected and the harness is unplugged from it before you go near to removing it.

Key cylinder is an easy part fix for the column [cylinder is an auto part store available part & the tools to install are also available as well as a manual on the car].

[I would check the shifter linkage if it wont shift into gear ],if it goes into gear but will not move check the transmission fluid level .

ABOVE ALL THINGS ; have an assistant in the car holding the brakes on, if you are working in the engine compartment on anything [for your own valuable safety of course]

  • The citation was only produced until 1985 You can just have the steering column replaced and that wil solve all your problems.

  • just get another car. it'll probably be easier and less costly in the long run anyway.
