Do you want another racing trivia question?

David H has inspired me. But I'll give more info. Here goes.

He was sold for $12,000 as a yearling. The buyer observed afterwards, "I must have been standing in a hole when I bought him!" He ended a "jinx" that a great champion had failed to end the year before, and his son became the second horse with the same attribute to do what his sire had done.

Who is he, and what was the jinx he ended?

Well, the horse is Determine who won the Kentucky Derby in 1954, but I can't figure out what jinx he broke.

Presumably the "great champion" who failed to end the jinx the year before was Native Dancer who didn't win the Kentucky Derby. I can't figure out what Native Dancer and Determine have in common other than that they're both gray horses. Maybe the jinx was that gray horses couldn't win the Derby? That's my guess.

You should give the points to kmnmiamisax for getting it right - the horse is Determine and the jinx was no gray horse had ever won the Derby. Native Dancer failed to break the jinx the year before. Determine's son was Decidedly, the second gray to win the Derby in 1962.
