Does reinstalling XP affect other programs?

One of my computers is behaving badly - ignoring commands; pretending that peripherals don't exist etc. I can't seem to isolate the cause, so I thought I would try reinstalling Windows XP from the recovery disk.

Just so that I'm forewarned - if I reinstall the operating system, is that likely to overwrite the registry entries made when other programs were installed?

Yes absolutely. You will lose everything unless you have partitioned your disk and has isolated the OS install from the other partition and all your programs are in the other partition.

If you reinstall Windows you reinstall the registry (you get a fresh copy). If you repair Windows, you keep your old registry files - for the most part. I've repaired some computers with no change at all (except that the damaged Windows files started working) and I've repaired some that had a lot of programs "deinstalled".

If you reinstall Windows, you will overwrite everything.

All your programs will be gone. All your personal files (photos, music, documents) will be erased.
