Is the martial art of Kali any good?

I mean can it prepare me for street defense and where is it better to learn and practice it?

Update:

Thanks, I have a choice of learning it in Moscow, Russia or going directly to the Philippinnes. It'd be kind if you recommended me a good teacher there. I'd like to practice with two long knives or two sticks for starters.

Update 2:

Thanks Maelani

(kali as with all phillipeno styles have a huge variance in their street application they go from really really good to, in the words of the instructor to my instructor "pure candy-***" we would need to know more about who would be teaching you and how. if you can give us websites and info on where you would be training and the specific type of Kali you would be learning.) really if you are taught right in any style is good california has many of the best schools on the west coast of the us including a group called the dog brothers ( they go a little too hard and end up retiring after about four years)

EDIT I do not knoow about russia but I can find info about the phillipenes through my sources give me a few days I will see what I can dig up

I only learned a little and it's good stuff. One escrima/kali practitioner told me that he was taught weapons first, then empty hands later. He stated that by that time he had already learned to evade sticks and knives whizzing past his head at high speeds, so why worry about a punch or a kick?

yes it is very good. in fact, i take it myself.

Just for some background, kali is of course a filipino martial art like escrima, or arnis. I dont know what kali system you are taking, but what mine is about is that kali was before escrima and arnis, before the spaniards came.

now, for kali, yes it is really fun. you probilbly will learn empty hand, and weaponry. and the good thing is, when you learn weaponry (which is the majority of the art) it translates to empty hand also.

so give it a try and see how you like it
