Is the idea of holding a UK General Election as the solution to the current expenses revelations a bit strange?
As all Party's appear to be involved and we are unlikely to get the chance to get rid of career politicians completely how would an election remove the threat of this continuing after the interest has died down. Political leaders have been all engaged in back tracking, dragging out the old soap box and in some cases virtually rewriting history where their MPs are concerned
Wouldn't it just be a case of same trough, different snouts?

The expenses issue is just an excuse to call for an election. Don't be fooled, Cameron isn't calling for an election because he thinks it's what's best for the country, he's calling for one because he thinks it's what's best for the Tory party. Is anyone naive enough to think he's still be calling for it if the Tories were 20 points behind in the polls?
This is just yet another cynical example of the Tories exploiting a serious problem for the nation to try to benefit from it. As usual, they don't care about the country, they care only about themselves. And people want them to be the government??

This parliament's time has passed.
Cameron has ordered some of his troops not to stand for re-election, but they get to stay in the commons until the next election and collect their 'golden goodbyes', so that is 3 at the moment on the tory benches.
Gordon hasn't told anybody not to stand, suspended 2, hung out to dry 1, no mention of Smith, McNulty, Vaz, Mandelson et al.
Who knows about Labour II ( aka Lib Dems).
If the UK is a democracy, then let the demos (people) cracy (rule). That means an election, and a cull of the crooks and chancers. If the party leaders can't do what is needed, then let the electorate do it for them.
Everybody should vote, and vote for people of integrity. That, after all, is what democracy is about.
You, the electorate, are the bosses and now is the time for you to fire the incompetent, inept and crooked.
Remember to Vote.

I don't see an alternative to a General Election because I don't believe the Party leaders will get rid of the crooks.
Apart from the Speaker, who has been punished with a mega pension pot and elevation to the Lords, only a minor Conservative figure has been sacked and one other Conservative MP has announced that he will not be seeking re-election. Two Labour backbenchers have been suspended. The main players are still in place and only the electorate can oust them. Unless their is a Police investigation I simply can't see the leader of any of party sacking anyone.

As is the way, the government of the day are taking the battering for a system which they haven't changed. The fact that the opposition (who instigated the rotten system in the first place) are receiving a boost in the poll's is simply politics.
Of course the Conservatives want an election now, they will win by a landslide. However I can't see electing an Eton educated Lord as speaker, and an Eton educated party leader as prime minister leading to drastic changes in the system. they will just find another way of carrying on like they always have.

What I find stranger is the man most vocal about calling an election (Call me Dave) Cameron - hasn't told us how he is going to fix the expense scandal that he is demanding an election about.
Mind you he hasn't told us one thing he is going to do should he be elected so I dont know why I find it strange.
Also strange is that we haven't had all the information out about MP's expenses yet Cameron is calling for an election before we have it all - maybe he knows there is more bad news - after all the only source we have is a very pro conservative Telegraph.

It will give the public a chance to voice their opinion in a very strong way.

a general election is needed because of this governments total incompetence in everything they have done. its not just the expenses

You're right. It wouldn't mean anything in that regard at the moment. We need to see what they plan to do about it all first, at least.
