Upgrading a 2008 Giant Trance X2?
I recently bought a 2008 Giant Trance X2 on special. While I'm not going to do anything immediately, what's the first thing you would upgrade? My first thought was shifters or wheels. Spec sheet: http://www.giant-bicycles.com/en-us/bikes/mountain...
Thanks
To clarify: shifters/RD: xt
And I wouldn't mind lighter wheels/cassette
sorry, shifters/rear derailleur I would want would be xt

Usually wheels would be a good place to start but they seem to be decent on the trance. If you're changing them purely for the weight saving you'll need to be spending around $500 for a significant saving.
XT shifters and mechs are very nice and have smooth, crisp shifting but won't offer massive advantages over your deore/LX setup.
The only thing I would upgrade would be the tires. The nevegals aren't bad tires but I think you could get better and lighter. I run continental race king supersonics on my bike which are great.
I would also upgrade anything that's annoying you such as the saddle and maybe buy a pair of lock on grips (I use lizard skins charger lock on grips)
But overall it's a pretty solid bike.

Having one of these the only I did was change the tires to what would work better for the terrain I ride, do the same unless the Kenda's are well suited for your area. for the other components, wait till they wear out, none really need to be upgrades unless you just want to. One area that you might want to consider might be the wheels, a good high end set will help the bike feel even lighter and more lively, along with better acceleration and braking.
