Why is Australia called Oz ?

    I don't think that anyone knows for sure why, but it's probably because we call ourselves Aussies (pronounced Ozzies) and that name fits in with a play on words of the Wizard of Oz.

    Easy: Aus = Oz. That's how we pronounce it in the Pacific/Australia area

    Australia's nick name is aussi

    just try to speak the letter (o) and the letter (z) you'll say : o, zee

    similar to the word (aussi) that's why it's called oz I guess
