Are all whistles clean? You know, by definition?

Where did the phrase "Clean as a whistle come from? I know, I know, I need to get out more.

    maybe because whistles were made of metal. they were clean and shiny. other than that i really don't know. maybe if u look up whistles on the net they will go into a better explanation. good luck

    Being as whistles have been made over the centuries from almost anything imaginable from reeds to aluminum i suspect it has to do how pure the sound was that came from the whistle.
