Sophie weaned herself in April at age 2.5. I am pregnant, and my supply began to drop early on; she was obviously ready to stop and it was very gradual and gentle. :)

When I decided to wean off the breast I started giving an occasional supplementary bottle and waited to see how she tolerated it a few days, then cut back one more. Eventually the Similac bottles took over until she was off the nursing altogether. With my first baby my milk was non fat and she wasn't gaining enough. With the rest I didn't have that problem so nursed them a long time.

It all worked out. Good luck

I nursed exclusively for 3 months then pumped and gave breast milk in bottles from 3 - 6 months while DD at day care. When I went back to work my husband would feed her a bottle of breast milk during the night. At 6 months I began to supplement with formula during the work day. I would nurse before going to work and after As I began to give solids she began to slowly reduce the number of feedings. Finally at the end of 11 months she weaned herself. It happened so gradual that I didn't have the pain I hear happens as your milk dries up.

I did it very gradually. I chose to do it over three months, as then it was less traumatic for both of us. I started by cutting out my least favorite feeding, and then cutting out an extra one when I was ready (emotionally and physically ie. monitoring engorgement).
