Self stick vinyl floor tiling question!?
When putting down self-stick vinyl floor tile, do you need to pull up the vinyl sheet goods already down on the floor? The surface is smooth, no holes, no bumps just needs replaced because the vinyl sheet goods were not properly installed around the tub/shower and we have a water staining issue. The installer didn't caulk at all!

Once the water problems is resolved then degloss the layer of vinyl that is already down. You can do this by buying deglosser at home depot (liquid sandpaper) and by scratching up the surface with a sander with rough grit sandpaper (60-80 grit). Yes, the proper way to do the job is to tear up the existing floor, however, this can also sometimes lead to more problems depending on how the original flooring was laid and the glue used to make it stick. I placed my peal and stick tiles over existing vinyl sheeting and it works great. Definately caulk around the edges. Also, purchase decent peel and stick tiles, the cheap ones don't use very good glue and will be a nightmare for you before long.

Hey, do what you can now. You'll have a nice clean floor for the years that you wait to afford the hardwood. Two years is a long wait and I guess some people are loaded... I'm sure you'd love to just do the hardwood now. You'll be able to install over it but if you have someone else doing it they'll prob. tell you you need to get up the vinyl first. It could be a prob w/ the meeting of the exsisting floor at the hallway as far as hieght matching up. Just go measure it. Good Luck.

You need to clean extra well. With TSP or something like it. Then put the stuff down for peel and stick tile. I got it at Lowe's. Can't remember the name. I did my bathroom several years ago and it is still in good shape.
