can a laptop computer be power thru a usb port ?

i have a gateway laptop computer and i believe the power supply connection is bad , can the computer be powered and charged thru a usb port instead of the power port on the back ?

Update:

wow , every one is a critic . in theory it would be plausable for this to work , i was hoping for someone who has tried it and it worked . no need for the insults and thumbs down people .

The power required to run a laptop would melt the USB wires.

    Sorry.

Technically No, but with the right amount of soldering and some wire, Yes you could charge through a usb port, but you would have to have a 20volt power supply, a usb cord, and more time than me. Normally its easier to repair or replace the laptop jack. Is their r a green light lit up on your laptop power supply if it has a light? When plugged into the wall does it make a popping sound? If their is no light (if equipped) and it make a popping sound when being plugged in you may have a short at the power adapter end. Cut the plastic off and inspect and repair. Check the dc jack on the laptop to see if 1. The jack itself is loose, 2. The center pin is loose. With both these problems, disassemble, clean and re-solder the jack.

    Thanks

    Dan

No, you cannot power the computer through the USB port. That'd be like trying to fill up a car by putting gas in the exhaust pipe.

lol@ the people giving thumbs down to NAD. Come on, if someone wants to void their warranty and is very very comfortable with soldering and working with wires and circuits, they certainly could do it. Granted, since the question was asked, i doubt the asker has the know how or the desire to do it.

and as everyone else said, no, other than NAD's rather interesting and perfectly plausible suggestion, its not possible to power a laptop over usb.

usb is being powered by the usb port of the pooter. If you have the ac adaptor plugged in than the computer is getting powered by the ac adapter. If you unplug the ac cord than it is running on batteries. so you basicaly answered your own question within your question.

No. USB Ports can only have a charge of 5v DC, which isn't enough for notebook computers (whick typically need 17v DC)

Um no, first of all USB drives only output voltage secondly they peek at 500mA which is no where near enough to power a laptop...

I believe it can't be powered through the USB port.
