No. What exactly defines a "true American"?

As a servicemember for 22 years I have thought that I defined myself as an American and promoted the values of the United States. The "standards and regulations" were hard enough when I immigrated my wife and stepchildren however, so I don't know of what benefit it would be to tighten things more. I would almost think it presumptuous for a "True American" that may have no actual experience with the complex immigration system to make the changes that might affect families like mine for their entire lifetimes.
My family is adjusting well to the United States, and we went through the proper way of doing things legally. But we still hear from elements in the United States that we are perhaps unwelcome. How do you feel things should be changed?
