Hi! You need to prep the wood with an appropriate sealer, apply a primer coat, follow up with multiple color coats and color-sanding, finish with a clear coat, and perform a final sanding and polishing of the surface. You would not need to do any additional sanding before beginning the process, if you are satisfied with the surfaces. Once you apply the primer coat, you may find spots that need filling and additional sanding prior to the color coats. The pickguard would not need priming or a clear coat, but use some 1000-grit sandpaper to dull the surface prior to painting. Make sure to use a quality brand of spray paint; you can buy off-the-shelf (Krylon, Rustoleum, etc.) at a hardware store, or even get colors mixed (Dupont, Sikkens, etc.) and put into spray cans at your local auto parts store. If you use lacquer, you will find it easier to work with than enamel; however, it is harder to find various colors in spray cans. Make sure that whatever paint you do get, you are able to color-sand the finish. Mask off the areas you want left bare using the medium-tack (usually blue in color, like the 3M Brand) painter’s tape. To truly get a professional-looking finish, you need a proper tutorial like the Stewart-MacDonald Spray Refinishing DVD at http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Video,_DVD/Finishing,_... or the Paint Your Own Guitar book at http://www.paintyourownguitar.com/ . Hope this helps some. Best regards, Dana
