What is the best resource for potty training?

They will both have different needs and will catch on at different times, I wouldn't recommend doing them at the same time at all. You may be tempted to have high expectations for the 18 mth old because the 3 year old should catch on reasonably quickly due to maturity. Both at the same time would be pretty busy and create lots of mess/washing.

Step 1 - talk about it and let your children see you going to the toilet for both wee and poo. I know it could be gross but hey if they see you doing it they will know its ok, doesn't hurt and they will want to mimic you.

Step 1.5 - let them sit on the toilet and be comfortable with it. If they want to sit and sing or read a book thats good. They need to feel comfortable with the place.

Step 2 - there is no turning back, once you get rid of the nappies, thats it you can't bring em back again - be strong. Only nappies for sleeps if you want, but take the nappy off as soon as they wake up EVERY time - be strong.

Step 3 - take off nappies and replace with underpants. You will have many many dirty underpants - they are NOT going to get it straight away. Get used to this idea and get comfortable with it - its a fact and its ok, thats why God gave us washing machines and strong soaking detergents.

Step 4 - YOU have to remind your child to go to the toilet AND then TAKE them to the toilet regularly eg. every 45 mins or so. This has to happen for the first few days. Best to choose a time that you are at home for a few days in a row and not out and about.

Step 5 - Tell them they are a big kid (or whatever you want) they are fabulous, they are great, give stickers/smiley face on hand/stars or whatever (don't use food/sweets/candy) to reward them every time they wee or poo on the toilet. Tell them they will get the reward ONLY when they use the toilet. After a few weeks you can stop doing this so much they will probably be over it by then anyway.

Step 6 - They will continue to have accidents - they get busy playing or whatever and forget so get comfortable again with the fact that they could still have accidents for years to come.

Step 7 - Get rid of nappies at sleep times when YOU are ready - you need plenty of sheets for their beds and pyjamas cause again it is likely they won't get it straight away and will wake up wet, with wet bed and clothes(often in the middle of the night). Get mattress protector (plastic sheet thing to protect bed). Use same principles as above - YOU need to take them to the toilet before they go to bed, YOU need to wake em up to go the toilet through the night once or twice (depending on how much liquid that you gave them late in the day) YOU need to remind them to go to the toilet as soon as they wake up.

If you forget they will too...they will get it eventually...don't lose heart...we were all there at some point in our lives....be consistent and firm....reward their effort....don't get cranky at the mistakes accept that they will happen and be at one with the mess!

Of course you can do the lazy, touchy feely way with candy, and pullups etc and have bed wetters.
