How to Repair after Virus removed?

AVAST Anti-Virus detected "file c:\windows\RVHOST.exe is infected by Win32:Hakaglan[wrm]" We clicked 8 for repair, and got a message "Repair: Error 42060 { The File was not repaired.}"

When we powered the computer (desktop running Windows XP) back up, the computer freezes on the desktop screen and displays a message "windows cannot find RVHOST.exe"

HOW do we resolve this ? Would GREATLY appreciate assistance... I'm located FAR away from the affected computer and doing this over the phone.

Update:

Okay Jamesmic... my problem is HOW to repair registry and such ?? I'm capable of following instructions... I just NEED instructions !! Thanks !!

First try a system restore to before the worm was installed.

Here's how to do it in safe mode

    http://bertk.mvps.org/html/safemode.html

If that doesn't work you can use Reimage which totally repairs XP computers.http://www.askthecomputerdoc.com/blog/reimage-repa...

It may cost you $65 for a repair, so if that is an issue for you contact them to check pricing.

If you can get to safe mode and can get malwarebytes installed on the affected computer, you can use malwarebytes to clean it. Rvhost looks to be a malware file so you wouldn't need to replace it.

If RVHOST.exe is located in the folder C:\Windows then the security rating is 57% dangerous. File size is 272,643 bytes (50% of all occurrence), 296,888 bytes. RVHOST.exe is a file without information about the maker of this file. The file is not a Windows core file. RVHOST.exe is able to record inputs, monitor applications, manipulate other programs.

File RVHOST.exe is located in the folder C:\Windows\System32 or sometimes in a subfolder of "C:\Documents and Settings". Known file sizes on Windows XP are 268,216 bytes (58% of all occurrence), 268,288 bytes, 292,864 bytes, 468,480 bytes, 273,920 bytes, 13,179,660 bytes.

Program has no file description. The file is not a Windows core file. The program has no visible window. The file is an unknown file in the Windows folder. The program starts upon Windows startup (see Registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Shell, HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run, HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run). RVHOST.exe is able to record inputs, monitor applications, manipulate other programs. Therefore the technical security rating is 87% dangerous, however also read the users review.

Note the registry keys indicate what to remove. Be careful, backup and be exacting. Good luck

Umm, I wouldn't strongly recommend this but it worked for me.

A few months ago I deleted a windows file and that stopped me from accessing windows at all. Safe mode does not work once you've deleted them. I contacted microsoft back then and I was advised on trying creating an extra partition on the pc and then moving the "deleted" file from the new partition to the old one. It worked on mine, but I've no guarantees for yours.
