Being a furry, I can tell you .. most of these answers are bull. They are assuming a minority of the furries are the majority, then making a heep load of assumptions.

terr m is correct about a small minority of the fandom. "Role-players" .. but it is in no way representative of all furrys.

Matteo M is also correct about a small minority. Fox fursuiters and homosexuals are factions, but not representatives of everyone.

    Angel is confused.

"Why not" is only correct about a minority. Fursuiters are a minority.. and they are often portrayed as representatives in the media because they are the largest visual representation of anthropomorphic creatures.

Pistol is correct about an even smaller minority. Dry humping fursuiters... I don't think you'll find any moer dry humpers in the fandom as you will outside it.

Simply put, furries are those who have an interest in anthropomorphic creatures. This interest can be expressed through role-playing, making costumes, creating stories, drawing, or making music.

    That's a furry.

Gabe and Midnight are both absolutely correct. Gabe gives a good idea of what a furry is, but there is far too much information to place in a post short enough to read in less than five minutes.

Encyclopaedia Dramatica takes a very anti-furry perspective. Those among the furries would say ED was written by a "troll," or furry hater. If you are looking for a more accurate perspective, avoid Encyclopaedia Dramatica. Attend a FurCon (Furry Convention) as an observer or, if you cannot spare time or money, I might advise WikiFur. I have not looked around the site much, but it is written by furries about furries.

The three above, Gabe, Midnight, and Richard, give the better answers. Listen to Gabe especially, he knows a lot about the fandom it seems. Avoid Encyclopedia Dramatica for any information on the topic.

Furry cannot be explained in a book less than 200 pages.

If you ask around, (especially online) you will definitely get a different answer from everyone.

In order to get a better understanding, I would attend your nearest furry convention before asking around the internet. Over half the people who answered your question don't know what they are talking about.

Furry- a person who wears animal costumes. Humans don't have furs. They wear costumes to give an appearence of fur.

edit: The dictionary says: " furry- (noun): Consisting of or similar to fur.

    2. a. Covered with, wearing, or trimmed with fur.

    b. Covered with a furlike substance.

    3. Having a furlike quality, as in tone; fuzzy: a furry voice.
