What are the differences between the various cotton diapers/nappies and which would you recommend?

I know that there are lots of good websites out there, but the lingo is very complicated and I'd rather not have to learn a whole new language to be able to understand the difference between the various washable nappies/diapers!

So I'd really like to hear personal stories about this kind you've used and would suggest (or not suggest!). I'm hoping to use the paper liners, if that's any help.

Thanks ladies - I'm in the USA but UK answers very welcome too. Currently 27w 3d. I'm 38.

    Quick CD vocabulary lesson:

Prefold: a flat diaper that you fold into thirds and put on the baby with pins or a Snappi. Needs a cover. Abbreviated IPF or CPF for Indian or Chinese prefold. I used IPF's for the frist few weeks with the covers below, and loved them.

Snappi: plastic thing that holds a prefold on without pins. Genius!

Fitted: diaper that is shaped like a 'sposie, goes on with snaps or velcro, and needs a cover.

Cover: diaper covers that hold in the wetness. Used to be plastic pants, but there are much more sophisticated versions now! I like Bummis Super Whisper wraps and ProRaps (only come in white, but cheap workhorses!)

All-in-One (AIO): These diapers are sized (you would have to buy a set in each size as your child grows) and are probably the simplest to use. No stuffing, pins, snappis, or covers. It's one piece to put on, take off, and launder. Downsides: May not be absorbent enough for a heavy wetter, and takes an eternity to dry.

Doublers: A piece of fabric (microfiber, hemp, and bamboo are popular) that you put inside a diaper to increase its absorbency.

Pockets: I told you about these above. I love that the absorbency is customizable. I spend 5 minutes "stuffing" the diapers (putting the inserts inside the outers) every other day when I do laundry. At changing time, it does on and comes off just like a 'sposie, with velcro instead of sticky tabs. I know which times of day he needs extra absorbency, and I just use a doubler inside the pocket then (mostly overnight).

One-Size: These are diapers, usually pockets, that are very adjustable in size and grow with your child. You could use the same diaper on both your children! I use bumGenius 3.0 One-Size pocket diapers. He's worn them since he was 3 weeks old, and will wear the same 26 diapers straight through potty training!

Everyone wants to know what to do with the poop. When a baby is exclusively breastfed, you just throw it in the washer, because the poop is mostly water, anyway. When they start solids and the poops get a little more... umm... substantial, you just flush the poop away before you wash. This is not as gross as it sounds. I use a diaper sprayer (thing you attach to the plumbing on the toilet) for the gross ones, and they make flushable liners if you want to do that.

Washing: The detergent matters a lot. I use Country Save, which I buy in bulk on Amazon. Wash once it cold, then once in hot, with an extra rinse both times. Dry in the sun to remove stains (sun bleaches the stains right out!) or throw them in the dryer if you prefer.

There's the quick and dirty on cloth diapers. A website I love is www.cottonbabies.com. There is an info page, and a chart about detergents. They are also really good about answering questions by phone.

    Good luck!

the two are organic fibers. the 1st uncomplicated distinction is that cotton is the made of a plant and wool may be the hair from considered one of numerous animals which contains a sheep, goat, etc. Secondly, cotton is a cellulose resembling paper while wool is a protein like our very own hair. Cotton and wool each have their very own particular traits. Cotton generally produces a quick flat twisting fiber it incredibly is extra effective while moist and likewise keeps the wearer cool. Wool is a hollow & scaly fiber and because that's hollow it has super insulating traits…that's going to keep you toasty heat! the two fibers could be woven or knit into very just about any variety of fabric, on my own or blended with different fibers (cotton/linen, wool/nylon, etc.). extra care must be excited approximately wool clothing because of the fact in the event that they are washed/dried at abode (rather if the care training at the instant are not observed top) the wool will “felt” mutually, meaning that the scales of the wool will interlock in the time of the agitation of the showering technique which will reason a misshapen garment. I continually think of of short wool sweaters with long hands! regrettably felting will not be able to be reversed. there are various adjustments between the two fibers. It in simple terms relies upon on how deeply you decide directly to delve into the undertaking…there's a lot of information out on the internet. have relaxing!

We use one-size (meaning, they snap to larger and smaller sizes, no need to buy bigger diapers every time your baby grows) pocket diapers (meaning there is a pocket to put the absorber insert into and take out of so it washes/dries quicker). We use the Bumgenius 3.0's, Blueberry Minkys, and Happy Heniys, they are all great diapers. Super easy to use- just like disposables except you wash them (which washing is also super easy).
