There is constantly the idea in the book that there is always something to be hidden. The most obvious example is the literal one: Erik is obsessed with hiding himself and his face from the world.

Less obvious ones include Christine's reluctance to say what exactly she feels for Erik. Does she not know? Does she think it's wrong? Does she not feel anything? It is left undecided.

Another prime example is the first one appearing in the novel: Meg Giry's reluctant gossiping about what her mother has told her sets the mysterious mood for the story.

Was that what you were asking? Your question was a bit unspecific...

Not quite sure I understand your question. If you read the original work by Gaston Leroux, you'll see it starts with his investigation of the story. Is it true? Is it fable? Did the Opera Ghost really exist? The book discusses the facts he's learned from investigating the story. He finds letters that were written by Christine Daae. He talks to the Persian. He performs his own indepth examination of what really happened in the story. Every character has a background - every character has their own secrets. I think you need to be more specific in what you're asking. You can check my blog for some answers to your questions.
