What is bioinformatics?

My daughter is thinking of getting a master's degree in bioinformatics. Can someone tell me or tell me where to find information about salary levels, what they actually do, and what the future potential is in this field? I 've done some Googling, but didn't find enough specifics. I also posted this on the biology site.

Thanks in advance!

It is a new and very abstract field. I imagine different universities will have different specifications and requirements.

As with most informatics fields, bioinformatics will likely change rapidly as data management techniques are produced. I imagine that it will also be a relatively high salary position.

Here is BMI at Arizona State University as an example:

“biomedical informatics" is the development and application of methods for acquiring, representing, retrieving and analyzing biomedical knowledge and data.

Bioinformatics focuses on the development and application of computational tools for the analysis of biomedical data (such as genomic and proteomic information) as well as the study of biological systems. Bioinformatics applications include algorithms, databases and modeling of biological phenomena.
