I use Flickr. It is free but can be upgraded to a pay account. You do have some limits with the free account, but I like it so far. You can change your settings so that only you or your contacts can see the pictures. If you are using it for personal pictures (I.E. Kid's birthdays, Weddings, and family moments), I would look in to a different site. Photo Bucket seems to be a better place for that. It is also free but can be upgraded. Setting are changeable as well.
Choose what you want type of picture you want to store and look in to a site that seems more specialized for it. Look at other users photos too to see if they have about the same thing you do. I emphasize finding a site suited because some frown upon certain types or are used mainly for something.
Hope this helps and is at least coherent.

Flickr works pretty well, as does Photobucket.
Honestly, though -- if you want only certain people to be able to see them, online storage isn't the way to do it.
It is possible, of course -- but if you're putting it online, you should be prepared for it to end up anywhere.
That said, some sites allow password-protected sharing. Photobucket does -- you can give people links to individual images, but if they want to see all of your image -- the "album view" or navigate to a different image, they have to put in a password that you set.
