Medical question about Endometriosis?

OK this is a little off topic ... so I have heard that pregnancy can 'cure' endometriosis. That's what my OB said, but I suspect he was over-simplifying it for me :)

My question is, how could it be 'cured'. Does so much of the endometrial lining get shed in the birth or afterbirth process than it totally rebuilds itself to a level you'd find in puberty?

I'm 32 weeks right now, but I had stage 2 (mild) Endo before pregnancy which made it hard to get pregnant. I'd like to try again in a few years and am just hoping the Endo will have gone away :)

Thanks everyone!!

In a person with endometriosis, every time the woman ovulates, some the lining of the uterus back flows out through the fallopian tubes and into the abdominal cavity, instead of out through the vagina. The contents that flow into the abdominal cavity cause the pain you get with endometriosis. During pregnancy, the lining of your uterus stays right in your uterus instead of trying to find a way out. Nothing back flows into the abdominal cavity and therefore you have no pain.

If you look at the picture I posted, you can see that there is a space between the fallopian tubes and the ovaries, This is how the lining is able to backflow into the abdominal cavity.

BTW, after the pregnancy is over your symptoms will come back. You will still have endometriosis- it is not actually cured. It just gets better during a pregnancy.

What I am pretty sure that he meant is that is "cures" it while you are pregnant. The person above me is correct, every time you ovulate, or go through your cycle, some of the lining, ends up collecting on the outside of you reproductive organs, and that causes the problem. Since when you are pregnant, your body is not trying to have a cycle, no tissue or lining will be expelled, so none will have the chance to build up on your organs. The same will continue while you are breast feeding, as many women do not have their cycles during this time. However, pregnancy will not cure it...you would still have to get the surgery to remove the tissue, it will stay in place in your body when you give birth. You mill probably want to go onto the shot, or some type of birth control that makes you not have any type of period what so ever after you've been breast feeding fro a while, this way the endometriosis cannot get worse. Good luck!

It wont remedy it in keeping with say. It will make your endometriosis and the soreness induced by means of it greater whilst you're pregnant. But when you give your child it's possibly that you're going to return to having the identical headaches as you probably did earlier than- the soreness, heavy bleeding, infertility hindrance, and so forth.
