Did Ancestry.com buy out Family Tree Maker from Broderbund?

We have an old version of Family Tree Maker from Broderbund (1996). We want to update to a newer version for Windows Vista, but the only family tree maker program we can find is one by Ancestry.com. Does anyone know if Ancestry.com bought this software and if it is compatible with my old data records??? I've searched the web for info and can't find anything. Thanks.

Ancestry.com, genealogy.com, rootsweb.com, and myfamily.com are now all under myfamily.com. The upset is that you still have to pay separate subscriptions for genealogy.com (family tree), myfamily.com and ancestry.com. I think ancestry has the best.

You may find this website informative on the merger and how rates increased since the mergers. Can you spell MONOPOLY?

I think they did. Compatibility is always a problem, when you go to new operating systems. If you can possibly do so, fire up the ancient creaking FTM and have it export a GEDCOM.

The path should be File > Export > GEDCOM, but it might be File > GEDCOM > Export. If neither of those work, click on Help and look up GEDCOM.

Any version of any program can export (write) and import (read) a GEDCOM file. I use Roots magic. I have imported GEDCOMs written by FTM, PAF, Reunion and Roots Magic. I've sent dozens to FTM users, PAF users and RM users. I sent one to a Reunion user.

Your new FTM might be able to restore a backup from your old one. Try that first, but make a GEDCOM before you toss your old machine.
