when i bought my lg plasma in 2006 in winced at my conscience telling me to fork out an extra £120 for the 3 year warranty-which i duly did.

13 months later the panel failed-after much arguing about who's responsibilty it was to fix the problem they wrote the set off and sent me a new plasma tv (the next model up).

so yes an extended warranty is worth the money-but as the poster above me rightly points out-when they attempt to sell you the warranty take into consideration the fact that the first year is covered by the manufacturers guarantee-so if they sell you a 3 year warranty" then insist it is for 3 years from the date the makers guarantee expires.

if they say no then threaten to walk away taking your business elsewhere-they will soon change their minds.

No. You are covered for the first year by the manufacturers warranty. The chances of failure are maximum in the first year. If you understand statistics you should know the bathtub curve. Imagine a cut through a bath, the tap end has a steep drop to the bottom. This represents the probability of failure in the first year, it is high falling to low. The bottom of the bath represents the probability of failure during the design life of the set. The rise at the end represents the increasing probability of failure at the end of the design life. Buying an extended warranty is statistically a waste of time as the warranty covers a period when the set is least likely to fail!

The basic answer is no. Although these TVs are costly to repair/replace there is a very good chance that it will not fail. Samsung in particular are known to be reliable. The best plan is to find out the total cost of the premiums and put that amount into a saving account. (ISA is best). That way if it does break down (which it won't) you will have a cushion against the repair/replacement cost.

unfortunately for you, Samsung has some of the worst and oldest

technology in plasma, so I would buy it if I were you. Or buy a

different brand. LG 42" 720p is way more advanced and about

the same price, same with panasonic 42" x1.

I bought a panasonic lcd tv and I needed a new screen within 4 months. I know it's different to a plasma, but i'm sure yours cost a lot more than mine so I think I would.

You can get independent companies to insure it on the internet

    Hello,

it depends where you bought it from, most shops overcharge for an extended warranty, if you had bought it from richer sounds you would get this warranty considerably cheaper as they dont rip anyone off, your household insurance may cover certain repairs if you have taken out accidental cover, However if you had bought it from Costco it would come with an automatic 3yrs warranty.

yeah lol... but get it from the manufacturer rather than the retailer as this will save money and time.
