Why is my dogs poop a different color?

My german shephard/lab mix dog poops a couple times a day and when my sister took her out this evening her poop was of a grayish white color. Im not sure what to do since this is my first dog. Should I take her to a vet, wait it out, do something or what?? Thanks!

you should take her to the vet, it could have to do with parasites or a high fat content in her food.

A dogs poop is usually brownish in color. A different color can occur from quite a few other things. What is the normal color of your dogs poop? Has it changed overnight or has it been over a few days? Has you dog been wormed for all parasitic intestinal worms? Parasitic worms are the most common cause of a change in color and the sooner you have the dog wormed the better it is. I use a drug called "Droncit" (Dronsit?) for my shepherd and it works very well indeed. I buy the drug from my vet. It's an "all wormer" and I administer the drug every 3 but not longer than 4 months. Our property is 26 acres in area, is covered in eucalyptus trees and grass. It is also home to a mob of kangaroos and a few wallabies. These native fauna carry intestinal worms and more so when it is dry, ie, no green grass for them to eat. The worm eggs are passed out in their poop and Kody, our shepherd, will eat it now and then as we go for a walk around the property. I always know when she has been eating the roo poo as her own poop becomes very dark, a deep brown to black color. It then becomes essential to use the Droncit to keep Kody in good health.

The light color as you describe is, I think, indicative of a worm infestation. I think the brownish "normal" color is caused by the used and expelled blood cells that the body excretes. This is a normal process and nothing to be worried about. The grey/white color could be caused by the intestinal worms feeding on the protein of the discarded red blood cells. If you do nothing about it, your dog could suffer from weakness and vitality. Its hair will become dull and even brittle in bad cases. Constipation can also cause very hard poop that is very white in color. Your dog doesn't have this complaint. Too much fat in the diet does not cause a color change as you describe it. Too much fat causes diarrhea that is usually very dark and very smelly, especially if a dog is fed the cheap tinned dog food. These cheap tins of dog food contain only about 7% or 8% of protein and only 5% fat but they are not healthy for a dog to eat. Your dog needs at least 14% protein (20% and more as a puppy) and at least 7% fat or even 10%. There are other causes that can only be diagnosed by your vet. I would definitely take your shepherd to your vet and also take a sample of the dogs poop to checked out.

Most likely just something that she ate. Don't worry about it. Don't listen to people who tell you to rush to the vet's office. Just like humans, what goes in is what comes out.

    BTW, it's spelled SHEPHERD.

It is probably just something she ate besides her regular food.

One time we were cleaning out an out building & found multicolored mouse turds. Later we found the crayons they were eating. My crazy mother saved them.
