Cash for Clunkers a success? I hardly think so.?

Really? How many of you have ever worked in car sales? I did, and I still have friends who work in car sales. And they all say the same thing. There was a huge lull in the months leading to Cash for CLunkers.. Why? because people who would have bought a car in those months, waited till the cash came available. Also what you got into the show rooms were people who were planning on buying in the months to come, but decided to move up their decision to buy so they could grab the cash for clunkers money. One thing you learn in car sales is 75% of people who walk onto a car lot, plan on buying a car withing 6 months. Your job is to move the time table up. The government simply shifted the time table for people who would already have bought a car. The other people are people who were not planning on buying a car because they could not afford one. This Program made them decide to buy a car they still cannot afford but come closer to affording. Lastly, what the programm has done is taken thousands of used cars off the road. Because they are being destroyed. Creating a shortage of value priced used cars in the market. Which in turn will drive the cost of used cars up. It has already risen 5% since the start and many experts say the average price of a used car will climb 20-25% before the end of the year. How is any of this a success? This is what I mean when I say people need to take an Idea and follow it to its logical conclussion.

Update:

Syntax, what about the people who purchased hummers and corvettes, and Chargers, challengers, and Camaroes. What about people who use the money to Mustangs and F-150's? Seriously go to a dealer and ask waht they are selling. They are selling everything. This did not change the buying habits of the people. Less demand for gas means that OPEC will simply lower production. We saw that happen just a few months ago. Prices fell so they lowered production even as demand rose. Nice try but history works against you.

Update 2:

Ok Bob lets see, Car companies are offereing constat incentives to try and get the people who are going to buy cars to buy cars from them. There is nothing different here. There is very little that can ever be done to make someone who has no desire to buy a new car, buy a new car. People are either in the market for a car, or they are not. Your job is to make sure they buy your car. This was absolutely no different. People were going to buy a car anyway. And each company scrambled to come up with a way to get the largest market share they could. But how is that different than any other time when there is no cash for clunkers. I mean really. Every day on tv there is a new add for some car company. This was just another add campaign. Wake up dude.

Update 3:

Syntax, your right getting rid of your old jeep that got 18mpg for a brand newe shiny H2 that gets 19 is amazing for the environment. Wake up dude, don't be such a tool. The democrats claim to be all for the the working man, and the poor. But in effect you just made sure that the poor can not afford to buy a used car for quite some time. Becuase you took all their affordable used options and CRUSHED them. And in turn raised the price of all other used cars.

Nice rant. Yes, it was a success that is why the funding became limited. Its good so many people turned in there gas guzzling, smog and pollution crap for better for fuel efficient green cars. btw if more people drove more fuel efficient cars the demand for gas would decrease and the price would drop.

Edit: btw even those new cars are more fuel efficient then what they traded in, under cash for clunkers the car traded in would not be considered a clunker unless it had 18mpg or less. I'm sorry but you are plain wrong.

Perhaps you should educate yourself friend. New cars also have better emission standards they run cleaner, its not all about mpg when it comes to being more green. Plus the majority of people did NOT turn in there clunkers for Mustangs and BMWs if they had that kind of money, would they need to have a rebate only worth up to $4500.

If it was so bad, why were most dealers adding other incentives, and cash back, on top of the cash for clunkers deal?....in some cases doubling the amount available from the government....

Cash for Clunkers = Epic Fail.
