With the $4500 Cash for Clunkers will the buyer get a 1099 to pay tax on that $4500?

If you get any free money from someone else, you have to pay tax on it at your own tax rate. Does anybody know if the buyers of these cars will get a 1099 so they can pay local, state and federal tax on that free $4500 on their 2009 taxes?

Surely the Obama government won't miss this opportunity to send you a 1099. If I win a prize at a local radio station, I think they have to send me a 1099 if the value of the prize is over $600. I think you will find the tax bill in the mailbox soon to everyone's surprise!

You bring up and interesting point and I wonder if that is in the fine print somewhere or in the vague language of the bill. You have to fill out a 1099 for anything over $999.00.

LOL, and to extraordinary it off virtually all of automobiles offered have been remote places automobiles. each issue the Democrats have accomplished are brief term fixes for long term issues. as quickly as all the government abode windows are caulked those human beings would be back in the unemployment line and as quickly as the roads are paved those human beings are back in the unemployment line...all the Democrats are attempting to do is make it look like the unemployment value is going down while in certainty those jobs created via the Democrats won't count selection for squat.

You're not actually getting "free money," you're getting a discount on the car purchase.

The rebate is going directly to the dealers, and yes, it is considered taxable income to them, but not the consumer.
