How do I winterize our root cellar?

We have a root cellar under the house and I need to know if I'm supposed to cap off the air intake and air outlet vents. It is used mainly for root veges. Squashes, potatoes. Also would it be helpful or harmful to have an air intake vent from the basement? It stays about 40-60 degrees in the NY winters.

As long as it stays above freezing you should be fine, but you may want to take an extra step and make sure there are no strong drafts coming in.
