How do you start choreographing your own dance routines?
I've been dancing about 5 years, and the one thing I haven't had experience on (personally) is choreographing a routine. I have done small bars of music (16-24 beats) but nothing more and now I've committed myself to prepare a routine, I'm not sure where to start.
Once you have the piece of music, what do you use to gain inspiration and piece together dance movements (in any style) that portrays the story of the piece?

One of my daughter's dance teachers says that he either choreographs to the phrase (i.e. the lyrics), or the beat. One or the other always gives him inspiration on what to do next.
For instance, if you were going to choreo "Up" by The Saturdays, you'd use the phrase. So when they sing "I only go Up!" that would be the time to fit in a jump, right on the word "Up".
My 10yr old has just had to choreo a dance so she went back over the routines she'd been taught previously, thought about her favourite moves (and which ones would fit to the beat), put them together and then added in moves that would tie in with the lyrics.
Hope that helps a little!

No, you won't always find it hard. You might not be remembering the dance steps the first time that you go because it's a lot to take in. If you remember sections of it, ask your teacher what the music is, put it on at home and practice! :) Practice makes perfect! And you definitely don't need to have natural talent to be good at street dancing. Some people have and others don't but determination is what will make you stand out from the rest. Have fun!

To start with try to only use music that really moves you. As a teacher I started choreographing contempory dances to DJ Sammy and other dance tracks. Then, when I was more confident I branched out. I am now confident with all genres. Choreographing for yourself is the best way to learn then start including others in your dances. Good luck and most importantly enjoy.

I suggest listening to the piece and trying to figure out the story and which emotion you are going to portray. Maybe improv to the song and it will spark the creativeness to prepare the dance. What song are you using? Best of luck! :)

As a dancer you fill the music. You shouldd go over thepiecee of music and start moving start with something basic like right foot back slide to the left, or what ever you want. you got to justexperimentt with the music. considerrhythmm, time and who the dace is for, couples or for groups. hope this helps you.

I find a song im really into, and the moves just sort of come to me
Or i uses bit from other routines, or pop videos etc, depends on the style of dance.
I personally prefer to start at the begining of the song, many dancers start however with the chorus. Its up to you, but once youve got started it all just sort of falls together
