iMac achingly slow ... Why?

Lately my Intel iMac I bought a few years back has gotten so slow that I can barely do anything with it. I bought an external drive to back up my files, and it took a whole week to copy about 80 Gb of files. A tech guru says it should only have taken hours, not days.

Could someone steer me to good places where I can learn about what may be wrong and how to fix it? Are there good Mac groups here on Yahoo or elsewhere that I can join and get help?

    Try rebooting with your installation discs and run Disk Utility to repair permissions (don't reinstall the OS). If that doesn't help, buy a copy of DiskWarrior and rebuild your directory structure.

    You may also want to try the Apple discussion groups.

    Because its a mac, Get a good well built pc and you never and slow problems again.

    Your iMac is slow because its built with inferior parts. To fix it, you need to buy a REAL computer.
