Obama's speech to schools?

What's your take on all the controversy about the presidents speech?

Other presidents have spoken to schools, yet no president has gotten as much flack as this president. Why do you think that is?

Personally, as someone in education, I see nothing wrong with it. If he encourages students to apply themselves, that's a great message children need to hear. I doubt it will be anything related in any way to some subversive "Socialist" ideal, as a small group would lead us to believe.

Update:

"70% of parents", don't know where that figure came from. Perhaps it's 70% of the small group?

Wow, that is quite a stretch saying just because they aren't addressing him as "The President" it's insinuating he's a god! Lol...

Did you read the speech? http://www.whitehouse.gov/MediaResources/PreparedS... I don't think anyone who's complaining has actually read it. There's nothing controversial there (except the last line - there's no need to bring gods into this - gods have nothing to do with education, and there's no need to make some kids feel left out at the end). I also think everyone who's crying 'socialism!' has no idea what that means. No where outside the US is socialism considered a negative.

Most schools won't bother with the extra materials, and wow, they are in NO way claiming Obama is a god. That's an extremely big stretch - seriously, dude, learn how to read things in context. There's no reason to write 'Obama' in every sentence if you just said the name a moment ago.

It's not some "small group". 70% of parents surveyed don't want this speech. The issue is not with the speech itself, it is with the accompanying "exercises".....specifically asking grades 6-12 to "read up on our presidents AND Barack Obama". The question is posed as if he is a deity or somehow separate from our past presidents.

There is also a question saying "How does he inspire us?" He? Obama is now known as just "he"? Like God?

In case you can't read between the lines, grades 10-12 will be of legal voting age by 2012.

If it were just a speech about staying in school, it would be fine....but it isn't.
