How do you motivate a 33 yr. old to get a job and stop using drugs?

I have a grandson who will be 33 this month and behaves like a 16yr. old. He is a 3 time loser for drug use and possession and is on parole. He lives with his parents, has no ambition and spends his time "hanging out" with losers and won't do any thing to improve himself. He has been this way since he graduated (he worked for 2 yrs but was busted for drug use) and his parents do not know what to do with him. He has a so called mental condition and is on Social Security disability.

Update:

Marie: No I don't know what his mental condition is; it is not a psychosis and may be just depression. He is a perfectly normal 16 yr old, HA!

I agree with the other answer that the boy (hmmm... man!) should be put into a drug rehab first thing and then while there, he can get a full psychiatric evaluation. Second, the parents are enablers. They need to stop! If he is still living at home, why should he move out and get a job? He knows where the easy life is! Because they pay the bills, he can use his money for drugs. He doesn't have to make a choice. If he has a mental disability, he surely has the means and wherewithall to get money to buy drugs even if he's stealing it; how mentalily disabled is that? He knows exactly what he is doing. If he is smart enough to do that, he can surely get a job. He is using and abusing my tax dollars if he is on social security and I resent that. If and only if after another psychiatric evaluation is done and he is deemed disabled, will I buy into that one.

But if I were his parent, I think I'd put the skids to finanical and basic needs assistance. I'd have to give him the ultimatum: Get out and grow up! But remember, they raised him and now they can't get rid of him as long as they continue their behavior.

manual labour in a good town, he needs to get out of his enviroment. What can you motivate him with? well deception would be the ticket but he might just end up bitter after that. You could maybe make his life a fair bit worse so that he wants to leave town...and you happen to offer a way for him to get away.

A lot of drug users feel hopeless, I was a habitual user, gave up when my parents offered to send me to rehab (well a private hospital, there for 6 months) it only some what helped me. What really motivated me was my current girl friend.

Life has to have meaning if you want to achieve things, help him find his meaning

Get him to a residential drug treatment center as soon as possible. Most users want the help deep inside, but are scared of what will happen to them and/or don't know how to change themselves. It's easy enough for a non-user to say to him "stop doing the drugs" but with most substances, there is both a physical and psychological addiction that is too great to fix by themselves. A residential center would keep him away from the drugs and the "losers" who are using them with him, and has a higher chance of success than trying to treat this without professional help.

Do you know what his "so called" mental condition is? If it is real, he may be unable to sustain a job. You can't make him do anything. The choices he makes are his. While it would be nice if we could help out family and friends and actually have them listen to us, it just doesn't go that way with most people. Take care and God Bless

okay so ive been in your situation before. i would have never thought my brother would do that either. but his girlfriend had told me a while back and i was stuck in your position. but honestly i thought about it over and over and it came down too that id rather have my brother be mad at me or not trust me then have a chance to save his future and have a chance to fix it now and so i told my parents and if he knew i was the one who told my parents im sure he'd be thanking me now. and so i personally think you should tell your parents you can even ask them too not mention that you said it thats what i did. this could be a big mistake for the future so sav

If you know God, you can pray about this. You can have a personal relationship with God by saying the prayer below. God is our Creator, all-knowing, all-powerful, eternal, holy, love. God loves us and sent us His Son, Jesus Christ, so we can go to heaven if we know and follow Him. Forever means without end -- time on and on without death. Forever is what happens after we die. Either we go to heaven and be with God forever, or we go to hell which is very bad and painful forever. The good people who are saved believers in Jesus Christ go to heaven. The bad people go to hell. We need to know and follow God in this world to get to heaven in the next world. We follow God by loving and obeying Him and loving others for Him. Jesus Christ, God's Son, is our bridge to God. Jesus died on the cross to cancel our sins. We need to accept Jesus into our life as our Lord and Savior forever to receive God's blessing and forgiveness plus go to heaven to be with God forever after we die. This is about being a born-again Christian. Faith in God is a gift from God. You can pray for faith in God. Just speak out and ask God for the faith to believe in Him and to follow Him. Some people find faith in God when they realize the beauty in the world is made by God. Evolution can't explain the world's natural beauty, for example, the parks in the world, animals, flowers, peacocks, sunsets, butterflies, rainbows, etc. After you have your faith on, you can pray a sinner's prayer to be a born-again Christian. This prayer is very important and should be said with a sincere heart and faith in God. This is the prayer: "Dear God, I know that I am a sinner and that Jesus Christ is the sacrifice for our sins. I have done the following sins (state these out) and I pray to discontinue these sins. I pray to receive Jesus Christ into my life as my Lord and Savior forever. In Jesus' name, amen." You could find a Christian church and try it out. I'm Lutheran and I like the Baptist churches. Some churches do a weekly Bible study group and these can be a fun way to make friends and learn about God's will for your life. God bless.
