What kind of snake was this?

I saw it on a sidewalk this morning while walking the dog (he ignored it). Light brown, about 12"/300mm long lying in a loose "S" shape. Definitley not a garter snake or copper belly as I've seen before in Ontario. After being prodded a bit with my toe it raised it's little head, opened it's mouth wide and struck back at the sole of my shoe. Repeated a few times whenever my shoe was within 3-4 " / 100mm of it. Inside of mouth was very bright reddish/pink. Went to find a jar to capture it but it was gone when I came back. Was this an escaped pet?

Update:

Maybe it was Storeria Dekayi but it didn't have the same skin pattern as the web photos, and the mini-cobra/pit viper behaviour seems unlike what is written about Brown Snakes

Update 2:

The Racer snakes Coluber Constrictor * don't seem to be common in Canada, let alone a Toronto suburb. Foxii is only found on Pelee Island, the brown one is only in Saskatchewan and there's one in BC. But the snake I saw did appear and act more like a brown-coloured Racer. Go figure.

At first description I would say it sounds like either a brown snake or red bellied snake, both of which get about 12 inches and are pretty skinny and brownish with faint patterns. But neither of these will typically open their mouths... they don't ever even bite if picked up. They'll coil and puff up if you bother them but generally wouldn't open mouths. It could have been a juvenile of something like a racer, as these will coil and strike if bothered. Difficult to pinpoint without a photo though since it could be many different things. Here's a website that lists snakes of Ontario and might help you find what it was.

This is a baby black racer but all baby racers look similar and whatever lives in your area would be nearly identical. You can see the striking behavior...

Hopefully that will help you narrow it down.
