Are psychiatrists trying to cover up the truth that schizophrenia is curable?

I have lived a lifetime with a diagnosis of schizophrenia paranoia and I don't have any symptoms anymore. I was recently told by medical personnel that I probably was misdiagnosed over 40 years ago and had schizo-affecrive disorder instead, which is curable. I am happy that I am well but pi**ed that my life has been ruined by the stigma of schizophrenia and the belief that I had no future but hallucinations. I have taken anti-psychotics all my life and still take risperdal. They never did stop the hallucinations until recently. I would like to come off anti-psychotic med's. but they advise against it. I would like to know whether the med's are the cause of my cure.

Update:

Dear "etcetera",

See www.psychconflicts.org for insight into the character of psychiatrists. I appreciate my lifetime of care but do not trust them.

I was taught in psychology many moons ago, circa 1983, that schizophrenia was a disease they divided into thirds, i.e. one third will become cured, one third never becomes cured and one third get much better taking medication. Maybe that notion has changed since I got out of school since psychology is not an exact science anyway.

    The Truth About Schizophrenia

There are many types of schizophrenia. Some come once, others come in bouts, some are chronic and stay with you for a lifetime. If you have been having hallucinations until recently then I would say you are far from healed and your diagnosis was not wrong. So I would say that you are better but that doesnt mean you are cured. I agree with your doctors to keep on with your meds, because you might have another "bout" like many others do too. It comes and goes.

No not angry, maybe a little frustrated. Most are far more interested in making the most effective treatments work for their patients. We all know medication can very effectively deal with the symptoms and make it manageable... and we also know part of the illness is that patients will stop taking their meds for a variety of reasons, then try to hide the symptoms and become increasingly ill over and over again. Diabetics and Asthma sufferers and people living with other disabling conditions also get sick and tired of their meds and the side effects, cancer patients sometimes just 'give-up' and seriously accept death as a better option. The difference is... they don't go out and try to kill other people, behave recklessly and bizarrely and involve the emergency services in rescuing them from themselves.

Only a doctor can tell whether or not you should be on or off medication.

That said, I highly doubt that psychiatrists are intentionally not curing schizophrenia. If they had a cure, they would announce it to the world and rake in tonnes of money from the publicity alone, not to mention the new drugs that would be manufactured to cure it.

You can only control and manage your disorder; you can never get rid of it. It's difficult to find a cure. More research is needed and more testing need to be done. If there was a cure, I don't believe that psychiatrists are trying to cover it up. What would the purpose of covering it up? Why wouldn't they want to help other people?

Do not stop taking your meds. They are vital in helping you.
