Bleeding from the mouth, yet NOT from the mouth?

I was told that my cat 11yrs old had a severe respiratory condition and bled from his mouth, yet the blood did not come from the actual mouth area. He all of a sudden started exagerated chewing motions with much phlegm, open mouth breathing and much drooling. WHAT could possibly cause all this in 1 day's time. He had to be put down.
