Modem only talks to 1 computer?

My mom got charter cable, Motorola 5101 modem, and plugged in her desktop to the network just fine. We go up, and try to plug in a router instead and it don't work. We then tried to plug in 2 different laptops into the modem directly and they don't work either. So the only thing this modem talks to is the original desktop.

There are no passwords or setup programs required or installed on the original computer. What next?

Customer service has no suggestions other than re-booting the modem - we done that. pulled the power and coax for 10 seconds.

since it works on the one computer, charter wants to blame everyone else, and we ain't paying for their guy to come out here.

Update:

We tried all that of the first two answers

The point is no other computer we brought with us will talk to the modem 1 to 1 with the Ethernet wire.

Try plugging the router into the modem, then plug in the computers into the router. That is usually how it works. If it is a wireless, then try plugging the wireless router into the modem then connecting with the router wirelessly.

A modem connects to a single computer. A router splits that connection to multiple connections.

In other words, simply connect the modem to the router and then the router to the computers.
