If you had $8,000 to spend on a 2003 or 2004 economical, fuel efficency car what would be your pick?

A car with low maintenance simply for local driving. A car with a history of no or very little engine problems. Japanese, German, or American car, it doesn't matter. Other words, what's the best? In your opinion.

    subaru. it will run for ever and ever

    Almost any Honda would work, depending on the shape, miles, etc, you can find. Toyota would do as well.
