Mrs. Dale,
You have said that you are suffering from mild scoliosis and osteoarthritis of the spine. Hence, you are not recommended to perform any exercises without the collective guidance of an orthopaedist and a physiotherapist. Because the kind of exercises you may safely do will be decided after a thorough analysis of the X-ray photographs of your spine and your blood report.
Something very important to you is taking a diet rich in calcium because calcium plays the main role in the healing and maintenance of bones. Your doctor may have already told you about this. So, you should consume foodstuffs rich in calcium like
-----> green leafy vegetables
-----> pulses, legumes
-----> figs, raisins, almonds
-----> milk and milk products like butter, curd, buttermilk, cheese, ice-creams
Besides this, you may also take some calcium tablets.
Wish you all the best...!

Exercise on a fitball....sit ups and twists done on a fitball will definately tone your abs....any physiotherapist will tell you that doing sit-ups from the floor is the worst thing you can do to your spine anyway...
