Society and/or family can make all sorts of "rites of passage" if they want.

Maybe being able to date. Maybe an extended curfew.

In some states.. you have to be driving a year to legally drive out of town or have passengers in the car.

Maybe you started your barmitzfah late OR haven't completed your Confirmation yet?

Maybe in a Protestant faith like the Baptist religion, you have decided to publicly proclaim your faith by getting baptized. Many Baptists don't get baptized until they are in their teens or twenties.

But I agree, over all, 17 is a dry year when it comes to rites of passage. In the US, at least.. you can't vote or drink yet. You still have to get your parent's permission to marry, but you can drive a car.

In a year however, you are legally an adult, can get married, drink in some states, drive whereever you want and with whomever, Vote, fight for our country, and get the death penalty.

Sadly, you can't rent a rental car 'til your 23... which I think is weird and silly.
